MPAA Strikes Anti-Piracy Deal With Torrent Client Creator Xunlei

Post by Nemo »

The company behind the world's most popular torrent client has struck an anti-piracy deal with the MPAA. Xunlei, a company backed by Google, will implement a content recognition system, ensure that MPAA content is properly licensed, and educate users on the effects of online copyright infringement.

While BitTorrent Inc.’s uTorrent and Mainline products grab most of the headlines, neither are the world’s most popular torrent client. That honor falls to the Chinese-operated Xunlei or ‘Thunder’ software.

As far back as 2009 the world’s leading BitTorrent trackers reported that Xunlei users accounted for more than 104 million unique users. Currently the client has an estimated 142 million users.

Considering the software’s reach the news today that client owner Shenzhen Xunlei Networking Technologies has done an anti-piracy deal with the MPAA is received with some interest, not least since Xunlei is the 12th largest Internet company in China.

As for the people who don't know about the torrent client called Xunlei: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xunlei. Its a very popular client that is mostly used in China by Chinese people. Its mainly used as a leecher client without sharing (uploading/seeding) and is bundled with bloat. Not counting the old modded version Thunder or whatever it is called (which is still crap though).

The strategy from MPAA to me seems somehow to take over the popular clients in order to have some influence into piracy that is going on.

Bittorrent Inc already have some agreement with copyright companies. (TorrentFreak reported on this IIRC).
Which is the company behind uTorrent since v2.x (or so), too.

So yeah. Vuze is also driver by profit.
qBittorrent is one of the few non-for-profit / legit / free / safe clients out there.

(Wonder when will they abduct Sledge or Chris. :D)

Even if they do, you just fork the project and continue as if nothing happened.
Open source is like an epidemic. You cannot stop it once it is released(unless the code itself is illegal).
