Low no. of DHT nodes in qbittorrent vs utorrent ??

Post by kyajibhai2 »

Hi..

I have just started using Sparky Linux 64-bit with amazing results..

One thing I have seen is that every time I startup qbittorrent, the total no. of DHT nodes displayed are consistently lesser than the ones which Utorrent shows, even when running via wine..

Is this something with qbittorrent or am I doing something wrong..

Please see the attached screen-shot showing 376 DHT nodes vs 1139 DHT nodes in utorrent both marked in RED BOXES for the exact same torrents seeding..

If for some reason, the attachment is not viewable, pls see this direct image link:  http://i.imgur.com/IhjWVAU.jpg

Thanks in Advance!!

Only the very recent ad and malware-ridden uTorrent has this many nodes.
I also noticed this, but I never seen any increase in the number of peers, in the speed of my downloads, anything.

It just had more.
Even if you enable "Mainline DHT" in Vuze, and also use Vuze's own DHT - you get around 400 DHT nodes.
Then again, never saw any improvements on these new uTorrent versions.

(/ opinion. This is by no means an official word or anything. Just my two cents.)

Hi Peter..

Thanks for the reply..

I am not a very busy uploader, having built-up around 41 torrents/uploads over the years but I have noticed that utorrent does upload a bit more.. Especially the PRO version..

Is this due to a better implementation of DHT, utorrent being a proprietary commercial bit of code or something else ??

Anyways thanks for reply..  :)

I tried to investigate, but never found anything.
If you install "VUZE", and enable the Classic UI + install the "Mainline DHT" plugin, you will see some of the workings of DHT.

But that's it.

That is, however, entirely just placebo.

1) Make sure you have the same Encryption settings in both clients. "Allow encrypted connections" is best, as it allows both encrypted, an unencrypted connections.
2) Make sure you have an active AND working port forward. Manual forward is best, since UPnP can be wonky at times.
3) Make sure NOT to use a peerblock database. It's pointless. (In my opinion.)
4) Make sure the connection numbers match / set properly. If you don't have enough upload slots for example, peers can't connect.

If these match, both clients will serve out just as much data.

Having switched over to Debian from Windows recently, I have come to realize why core-techies don't consider windows as an OS.. My ram, cpu & disk params are way way lower than my struggling Windows box..

As regards torrent uploads go, I never enable encryption as it is not a big issue here in India.. Heck my ISP's main logon page shows, "10,000+ movies for Rs. 299 (US $5) if you're interested".. Also I have seen my uploads suffer a bit after enabling encryption in the past.. Port-forwarding is straight-forward, whether it is static or UPnP and I have never used a peer-block or added any limits to any upload/download slots..

The one thing that I really like about utorrent is that apart from the bigger no of DHT nodes it shows connected to, is that I can "Right-click" all my torrents anytime and click update.. I can see all my DHT/PEX/LSD as well as custom trackers updating in real-time.. Also all Torrent-trackers can be edited simultaneously, whereas qbit or Deluge etc require you to update them manually, which is a big put-off for a user looking to change clients.. Makes u miss utorrent instantly!!

But as u summed it up, "If these match, both clients will probably serve out just as much data."

Thanks.. :)

Enabling encryption helps with speeds, though.

Make it "Enabled". So your client will encrypt IF the other party NEEDS it.

Imagine you have clients "A" - the people who have it DISABLED.
Imagine you have clients "B" - the people who have it on FORCED.

As you have it disabled, you can only connect to "A".
But, if you enable it, you can connect to "A" and "B" both.
