How do I get my VPN to work with Qbittorrent?

Post by porkandbeansboy »

So awhile back I found out that my VPN wasn't working with Qbittorrent for the longest time as it needs to specifically set up for that which seems ridiculous but point is I want to make sure that I've properly set up Qbittorrent to work with my VPN and I'm using windows 10 in case that matters.

I'm hoping someone here can give me a straight forward answer to this as I haven't been able to find one when I looked on duckduckgo search engine.

How do you know it's not working with qBittorrent?
Which provider are you using?

qBittorrent is completely independent of your VPN. It's entirely unrelated. The only time a VPN client would ever need to know about it is if you have a split tunnel configuration to selectively exclude/include particular apps' traffic from being tunneled and/or it has a granular app-specific kill switch. As a matter of fact in many cases you don't even need a VPN client app installed. Windows already has built-in generic VPN functionality at the system level. All you have to do is manually configure it with your provider's settings. The majority of end-users don't do this, however, since it's more convenient for them to run their provider's dedicated app.

Regardless of whatever funky situation you've got going on here there are a handful of workarounds. Changing your VPN provider, manual configuration of the VPN, running the VPN on your router instead (which will protect your whole network), or even running it on a separate host on your network and then tethering to it from your machine. With the latter solution the network connection bound to your VPN interface is shared via Internet Connection Sharing (ICS). The connecting host doesn't need to know anything about it as the process is fully transparent.

Well I know it's not working because the place I download torrents from informed me of my false sense of security. I'm usign NordVPN if you must know and Qbittorrent doesn't appear to be working at all currently and I'm worried it might be cuz my VPN is interfering with it's connection.

Those torrent tracker sites are always saying that their visitors are exposed even when they're not. They frequently push affiliated commercial VPN services. Connect NordVPN and then visit the URL below. At the top of the page if your status doesn't say "Unprotected" then it's working.

The only thing your ISP can do to interfere would be to drop or throttle your VPN's traffic. They'd have to blindly target the entire connection since they can't read or modify the packet data. It's all encapsulated inside an encrypted tunnel. Some ISPs use advanced Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) security appliances like R&S PACE and Cisco Encrypted Traffic Analytics (ETA) that can infer content, even if it's been encrypted or obfuscated, but it's not going to be accurate in this case. Not when all of your bidirectional internet traffic is being multiplexed over the same TCP/UDP connection.

If you want to make sure that you're protected, go into into Settings, Advanced, and change the setting for Network Interface to the VPN adapter. Depending on your OS and provider, it'll be different names. After you change the network adapter, restart qBittorrent. Now as long as the VPN is up, qBittorrent will leech/seed torrents. If VPN drops, it stops. I do this on my Linux box running qBittorrent-nox.

Well I've managed to somehow break Qbittorrent entirely going from a VPN broken client to an entirely non functional resource using program on my PC that I'm begging for someone if they can't help me to get it to download torrents again as it doesn't matter what setting I chose... than can someone please mention an alternative Bittorrent client for windows 10?

Listen, several members in this thread have tried to help you for a while now. You never even bothered to respond back to our posts. 🙄 So, I wouldn't expect anyone else to waste their time helping you troubleshoot your issue. You're likely on your own.
