I'm using Windows 7 and I would like to update qBittorrent.
Is it a good idea to uninstall the older version first? Or is it safe to just install the new version over the old version? And does this apply only to minor versions or all version? Moreover, how do I make sure that the program settings are preserved and don't get overwritten?
How to update qBittorrent?

You don't need to do that.

Yes, it safe.

All versions.

Don't worry, your settings will not be reset. I'm under Win 7 too.

Hello LL0z. To add some more infos, qBt settings are saved in two independent folders on your hard drive.
C:\Users\yournamehere\AppData\Local\qBittorrent -> mainly stores your torrent files, the cache, qBt search engines
C:\Users\yournamehere\AppData\Roaming\qBittorrent -> stores qBt preferences, the resume file which contains the current states of your torrents and your rss feeds.
So if you want to backup your settings, it's all there. the appdata folder is hidden by default, you can enable the "show hidden files and folders" option on Windows or simply type %APPDATA% (case insensitive) in the adress bar of any explorer window. by typing this you will end up in C:\Users\yournamehere\AppData\Roaming\
Also, you can type %USERPROFILE%/appdata to end up in C:\Users\yournamehere\AppData
Hope this will help you a bit!

Re: How to update qBittorrent?
If I am not mistaken, sledgehammer_999 made the current installer to run the uninstaller silently before the actual installation.
Due to this, my recommendation is to run the uninstaller manually before running the installer to change the uninstaller's option.

You are correct. If you want to change the default unistaller options(ie delete configuration files) you should run the uninstaller manually first.
