No -- when I try running the installer it wants to put it in C:\Program Files (x86)\
What's also frustrating is the auto-upgrade feature in the 64-bit version notifies me there's a new version available and it turns out to be a 32-bit version.
I would prefer they just drop the x86 edition and focus on x64.

Not likely to happen for the foreseeable future I would suggest.
There are comprehensive instructions on how to compile from source using the various versions of MS Visual Studio on the
qBT Wiki

Is there a way to turn off auto-upgrade or upgrade prompt?

hum no, qbt is limited to 2048MB , he never use more memory, but at least qbt don't crash
Is threre a solution to use more memory ?
to reproduce the problem fastly, set cache expiracy to 600s, seed some torrents (more than 2GB) and qbt will fastly use all memory.
ps: i'm using windows 8.1 with 12GB ddr5
EDIT :
Nevermind ! the cache limit set on "auto" is limited to 2048 MB, but i can set the cache manually to 4096MB max
and my qbt use ~5200MB
