Why the hate for grey?!?!
I could leave the downloading as green. I just thought black should indicate active torrents and grey inactive torrents.

EDIT: @ the user you said to leave them all black and differentiate via the status icon/status text. I think color coding is a powerful tool if used correctly.

The grey, especially on a white background, is hell on the eyes. The orange, currently being used, is just as bad.  Something like a neon yellow would be even worse.  If you must have a separate color then us a deep blue that contrasts well with the background and doesn't cause eye strain.

I was thinking the following instead. But since I haven't actually tested I don't know if it will work.
Have 2 sets of font colors. One set for light backgrounds and one for dark backgrounds. And decide which set to use based on the background. It seems that there are ways to determine what kind of background you have programmatically:
1-> https://stackoverflow.com/questions/596 ... -rgb-color
2-> https://stackoverflow.com/questions/185 ... ound-color

This would be awesome if it actually works.
The above set is for light backgrounds. For darker backgrounds we might need to only switch black/grey with white/something else.

Yeah, I think it is implemented in Pidgins nick list in chat rooms. It works pretty well.
TBTH though, the current colour scheme looks very good on a black back ground. The green isn't too dark and the orange comes out well and the theme is generally easy on the eyes. White on black I think;after testing a lot of fore ground colours on black back grounds in my days, is a bit too *bright*. Too much contrast (maximum actually) and I think it should be some what avoided.

I can imagine having current scheme on a white background some what difficult.

Either way, what ever comes out of this I think it'll be okay.

@sledgehammer_999 as you suggested I would also like Grey color for paused torrents and red for error ones because red for paused torrents it does not look good at all.

According to me @TheMinecrafter suggested color combination/code for each type is better. @Sledgehemmer suggested color combination is good, but any two categories (seeding/queueing/downloading etc.) should not have same colour.

Thanks.

According to my knowledge, I suggest the following colors:

Red: for danger - Error
Green: good color for allowed/permission/ route is clear - Downloading
Blue: also good color - Seeding
Dark Red: near to red - Paused
Purple or Violet: - Completed
Brown: near to red - Stopped
Rose - Queued

This is only my personal view according to my existing knowledge. But some changes in colors should be done if any error is there.

One more suggestion: if back ground color is a light color like white/yellow, letters color should be dark.
or if back ground is a dark color, letters color should be very light.

Hope it will be very useful to developer, admin and other team members.

Here is my opinion on the colors.

Error - Red. This is the only color that should stand out significantly, since problems in operation need to draw the user's attention.
Paused / Queued - Grey or otherwise neutral color.
Seeding / Downloading - Distinct colors obviously to indicate difference, but also stronger colors to indicate an active state. (green/blue/orange/etc)

I don't think black is a good choice for downloading but only because all the text in the rest of the application is black. It just seems kind of jarring. Like if all of the text regardless of state were black it would be fine, or if every indicator of state is a distinct color that's also ok, but to mix them seems inconsistent to me.

Interesting approach. If it works it may be the best choice.

I disagree with it.
To me this should look like an old version of KTorrent.
All fonts in torrent-view should look smaller(including the width of it), sharper and by default black.

For color of the status i also suggest just what KTorrent had:
(please google so you have seen what i have seen)

Black to stopped.
Green to download. Green to seeding.
Orange to stalled.
Red to torrents with no downloading/seeding after x announces.

Regardless of there colours selection, there should be an all black option.  One simply has to have the option to sort and filter on status to identify everything without colours.

All you guys suggesting black are poor readers IMHO. Or may be oblivious to the fact that black should be used as often as white for any for ground coloured font.

That would be never. Correct.

Read up on diverse UI systems and how people have dealt with it in the past. Lets not reinvent the wheel.

Edit: To clarify: There are three ways to make a coloured font work for everyone.

1: Manually: User choose via settings or editing.
2: Automatic: qBT chooses from two different colour pools depending whether user have dark or bright background as sledgehammer999 suggested.
3: Nothing: No hard coded coloured font at all. Which means qBT uses what ever colour is specified by the currently used OS theme. Note that this will likely be just one colour and thus render this topic useless.

On a second note, icons could show current torrent state anyway as long as they're not black or white..

I think the perfect solution would be a possibility for users to choose their own colors e.g. by entering a color code or with a color picker.
In case that is not an option for the devs, you should at least consider adding 2-3 pre-defined color combinations to choose from. Because it is virtually impossible to come up with a color combination that looks equally good on dark and bright OS themes.

Thus I will add two suggestions (dark & bright OS theme):

DARK:
Error: red
Paused: light-grey
Queued: white (not 100%, but e.g. RGB(247,247,247)
Active Download: light-green
Active Seeding: light-blue
Stopped: grey

BRIGHT:
Error: red
Paused: grey
Queued: black (not 100%, but e.g. RGB(33,33,33)
Active Download: green
Active Seeding: blue
Stopped: light-grey

All colors, except red, with neither too much nor too few saturation, since both wouldn't be too convenient to the eyes. Apart from that over-saturation hardly ever looks good.

So far my suggestions  :)

The yellow in Zeomal's post is very near unreadable here and I suspect a 'light blue' would be very close to white on white

Not sure if you are refering to my post, but indeed that is why I suggested it for the dark OS themes with a dark background.

Noo yellow is a wonderful colour, evokes feelings of well being etc.

It's just a right royal PitA to read white text off it :)
