Can only connect to specific peer after client restart

I downloaded a torrent where there was a single seeder, and I the only peer. I would connect to the seed for a few moments, get a few mb of data, then lose connection to that seed. I found that if I restarted qbt (452), I would again connect to the seed, and get a bit more data. I restarted the client a number of times, and eventually completed the torrent. If this happens again, what is happening, and what can I do other than restart the client (which, of course, is a dick move to all the other torrents I'm seeding), to keep connected to the solo seed/peer?
