Internet Connection Intermittently Killed While Downloading

Post by FlyingFrog »

This isn't an easy issue to search for so apologies if it's been asked before.

I'm having an issue where while downloading, every few minutes the internet connection on my computer seems to go down (dl/ul goes to 0). No other programs can access the internet either (browser, etc...). This lasts a few seconds and then the connection is restored.

Other devices connected to the router are unaffected, only the computer running qBittorrent has this issue. This issue also don't happen when it's only seeding.

Has anyone come across this issue before?

This frequently happens when any program, in this case qbt, is using up the majority of your connection. Windows is not terribly good at bandwidth management. The easiest solution is set max download speed to be about 80% of your total available speed, that way there is at least SOME internet left over for other apps as they need it.

Appreciate the tip. I've been testing various speed limits and # of active downloads for a few hours and it does seem to help, but doesn't fix the issue entirely.

How do my current settings look? Anything that looks off?

# of active downloads: 2
Speed limit: 55MB (1GB connection)
Global max connections: 175
Max per torrent: 20
Global max upload slots: 20
Max upload slots per torrent: 5

This was a very common occurrence like 10 years ago.

Basically... crap router.
Just reduce connection numbers - it won't affect speeds all that much.
Still, craps itself? Reduce it again.

This should fix it.

Thanks, I'll continue to tweak the settings.

You're probably right on the crap router part, just using the one from my provider.

Unless it's fiber-optic, you can usually replace the router.

If it's coming in with a LAN cable, or you have a "modem" that connects to the router, you can just connect that cable to a new router.
- If you have a username/password (PPPoE) for the connection, you can and will have to specify those in your WAN settings.
- If you don't have any such, it's probably just DHCP, then it will be plug and play.

If we have more info, we can help further.
