Windows XP? Don't. Just use uTorrent. The old 1.8 version, 2.2.1 version.
But honestly, you should not be downloading anything there since you have no way to even scan the downloaded content. It should not even be on the open internet.

Windows 7: I'd say the same, 2.2.1.
qBittorrent is great; but you should use a new-ish version.

I repeat: DO NOT USE OLD VERSIONS OF QBITTORRENT.
- They might have security holes.
- They are not whitelisted on most trackers.
- Hundreds of issues has been fixed since.

Qbittorrent is the BEST if you can use the latest version.
If you can't, you should use a true and tested old client like uTorrent 2.2.1.

qBittorrent v4.5.5 and v4.6.0RC2 were released.
This will be the last release of the v4.5.x series. Users running the Qt5 edition will not be notified for new updates if they are running on older Windows versions than Windows 10.

Old versions of qBittorrent may still run on those outdated Windows versions but that doesn't mean you should be using them. Both Win XP & Win 7 reached End of Life (EOL) many years ago. They're no longer maintained. You can't even get security patches for them anymore through Windows Update. Update to a newer Windows OS version like 10 or 11. It's worth pointing out, however, that Windows 10's development is going to be discontinued by October of next year. You're better off updating to 11 if you're a Windows desktop OS user. If you're a Windows Server user then you should be using Server 2022 (note: Windows Server 2025 is slated for release any day now).

But it is.
- The old qBittorrent version are NOT secure.
- Windows XP if you put it online or use it online is NOT secure.

Using old OS is totally fine on special hardware, deployment. Like a terminal, a store system, medical device, whatever. It's just a purpose-built, air-gapped, offline device (hopefully). But as soon as you go online, you are asking for trouble.

If you still feel suicidal...

- Use an antivirus, because unlike Windows 10 and 11, it does NOT have a proper security software, it never had one. Avast works I think.
- Deploying a commercial firewall before the system might help, but I realize this would be out of budget for most.
- Even with all of these, being online, it's a minefield.

... you can just install a Linux.

It's 100% free, gets updates and every modern thing just works on it. Not talking about crazy technical distributions but something simple. I've put Ubuntu for example on family computers and they didn't even notice a difference. It has Firefox, it has music player, it plays every video, it has casual games, things just work on it.
