Torrent deleting issue

Post by rigsby »

After installing v5, if you permanently delete a torrent - by 'shift delete' - it sometimes still goes into the Recycle Bin. The 'Also delete content' box is checked so I think it's a bug that's crept in ??

Hmm. I have no such issue and I'm also using qB v5.0.0. I just tested the ‘delete content’ option when removing a torrent and it worked as expected. For now you can just go into your torrents directory (\downloads or wherever your save path is) and manually Shift+Del the torrent's respective folder. Or, you can just tell Windows never to move anything to the Recycle Bin in the first place. Right-click on your Recycle Bin icon → Properties → General tab and then select the radio button below. If you go this route just be very careful not to accidentally delete anything. You may not be able to recover the file if it's subsequently overwritten or your SSD runs a TRIM operation.

I have the same issue. Deleting a torrent work but is not deleting the "real" file(s).

The error is something like:

2024-10-02 01:21 - Failed to remove torrent content. Torrent: "blablabla.1080p.web.h264.mkv". Error: "Unspecified error"

my torrent directory is on a QNAP via SMB.

Interesting. This may only affect non-local storage locations then like network shares or NAS. Your logfile output should look like this:

(N) 2024-10-02T01:14:48 - Torrent removed. Torrent: "LibreOffice_24.8.2_Win_x86-64.msi"
(N) 2024-10-02T01:14:48 - Torrent content removed. Torrent: "LibreOffice_24.8.2_Win_x86-64.msi"

Thanks LilTroy. I don't want to completely remove the option of using the Recycle Bin. It's useful in case you do - as you said - delete something accidentally.

In version v5, a 'shift delete' command - including data content - moves the actual downloaded file to the Recycle Bin.

In the previous version (which of course I can't check now), nothing ended up in the Recycle Bin after a full delete.

It must be a bug then that only affects some users. I re-enabled my Recycle Bin and using qBittorrent v5 the torrent content is actually deleted. It never hits the bin. I'm using local disk storage (internal M.2 NVME PCI-e SSD). Until this is looked into by the devs you can just permanently delete it through the Windows shell. Open your save path directory through qBittorrent's UI and then manually Shift+Del the torrent data file/subfolder in Windows Explorer. It's not quite as convenient but the end result is the same.

Thanks LilTroy. It's not that big a deal, I just wanted to bring it to someone's attention. I can easily empty the Recycle Bin when I notice it has torrents there.

You're welcome. By the way, look what I found under the Advanced options in qBittorrent v5. This was on by default (apparently I had changed this setting and forgotten about it).

Change it to this and see if it fixes your issue.

WOW - you cracked it. I haven't looked in the Advanced Settings for a while. Just found this in the v5 Changelog :-

FEATURE: Allow to move content files to Trash instead of deleting them (glassez).

Have a drink - I'd say "on me" but I'm probably not even in the same country as you !!

No problem. Yeah, I didn't even realize it was noted in the changelog. I would classify this as a bug. There are 2 related features exposed in different parts of the UI that conflict with each other. The global advanced setting needs to be explicitly enabled to permanently delete torrent content and the local torrent-specific option “also remove the content files” must be checked. Otherwise the torrent content will end up being moved to the bin. On the flipside, if you use the global advanced default “Move files to trash (if possible)” then it will override the local setting “also remove the content files”. This is the issue you were experiencing. There are 3 potential solutions to the problem:

¹One of these deletion options should be removed to prevent this conflict
²If both are kept then they should be synchronized with each other
³If both are kept then the local setting (user prompt) should always override the global setting

Yeah the thing is, we all have different opinions. Not trying to pick a fight I am just saying. I also tried to submit PRs to the project but different things makes sense for each of us - if that makes sense.

I'd have:
1) Made this trash behavior default. Like now.
2) I'd have added the "Delete from disk not just move to trash" option to the remove torrent dialog
3) I'd add a small button to that Remove pop-up so the user can save behavior permanent. Just a button there to save the current selection, like "Remove data" or "Delete data not move to trash" or whichever combination they choose. This is how they could change it.
4) Done. No advanced settings.

But that's me. And what you wrote is you. And what we got is one of the main devs. We all approach it in different ways, but neither is wrong I'd say.

Thanks for this thread, i had a similar issue. It's insane how you must dig into extra tabs and advanced settings to find something. they should make important options more accessible. With the proper software settings i was able to fix the seeding issue.
