Update procedure and some questions

1. Whats the update procedure like? Uninstall old version then install or just run the setup executable (3.0.6 over 2.9.x in my case)?

2. I'm used to run emule but its seems really old since development has been abandoned for years now, is emule still a decent p2p app or is it now so full of bugs like security holes/leecher hacks that it is not worth it now?

3. How is qbittorrent for sharing lots of small files like documents/research papers etc

Hi and welcome :),

1. The best you can do is uninstall 2.9.x, delete also the hidden maps under C:\Users\[User]\AppData\Local and C:\Users\[User]\AppData\Roaming named qBittorrent. I would advice to remove the exception from windows firewall too, if you're using it. It will ask later on after installing to add again. This to avoid any problems that might occur later, maybe.

2. eMule is still a good p2p client in my opinion where you can find rare files which are not available with torrents. But I think that the users are less now compared to before when Razorback server was online. 0.50a is still good don't worry, I also use it now and then :). If you're experienced you can try mods with more options and settings, good and fair ones of course.

3. Great, but (as you know I guess) qBittorrent works with torrents and magnet links instead ed2k links. Before confusing these 2 :).

No, the installer doesn't add a windows firewall exception. Also, removing the configuration files is not necessary.

When you start qBittorrent for the first time you get a window prompt asking to add an exception for qBittorrent.exe in windows firewall, if active (if it isn't already there, or removed), not the installer itself of course. Im not sure who's build he was using before so I thougt, just to make sure, for an clean install before we get "problems". Follow sledge's advice then and see how it goes, just install right away. Thanks for correcting sledge.

Thanks for the reply.
Should I have to make a backup of the BT_backup dir and copy it back, I don't want to lose the shares that I've set up.

What I was trying to get at was whether torrent was 'meant' for large numbers of files like docs/ebooks instead of a few big zipped files in terms of protocol overhead. And is there a current FAQ on how to set up the advanced options like the number of connections/upload slots, tweaking type stuff? I'm not anywhere near as familiar with torrent as I am with emule.

You shouldn't have to change/delete config files, it would be a good idea to back them up just in case, but I'm really saying 99% nothing will go wrong.

However IF you have problems, weird errors, unexplainable happenings within qBittorrent... it may be time to consider deleting these config files, sooner rather than later. And/or if you made a backup just uninstall the new version, reinstall the old version and replace your backup files. You'll be back to where you were at least.

I would say torrents are more meant for large files. I'm not sure how much you know about torrents but, at most basic level torrents' files are broken up into 'chunks' these chunks makeup all of the files in that particular torrent. Larger torrents get larger chunks. It doesn't matter much if you have one big file or a lot of small files, unless you're talking thousands of files... you would probably want to zip those. Also keep in mind if you create a torrent with a lot of small files and people pick just the few items they want it may never see complete seed, another reason why some may prefer to zip lots of small files into one larger file. Then the second point, about these 'chunks' if a file exists between more than one chunk, and someone picks just the one file they have to download the whole chunk even though they only wanted the one they may have ended up downloading almost twice as much as they wanted... of course if it was zipped they would have to download it all. I hope this is making at least a little sense.

And, about advanced controls, there is no guide/FAQ that I know of. The way I always looked at it, you don't NEED to use advanced settings, or if you do you should already know what to do. Number of connections/upload slot, this should be on the Connections page under Connections limits, yes?
Did you have specific questions about a setting in the advanced tab that we may be able to answer for you here?

If you uninstall qBittorrent and then install the new version nothing should be lost from your shares. If you want to be really really extra safe you should make a backup of your BT_backup dir (and the other dirs) just in case.
