Computer needed to be restarted for association to take effect.
Just installed, and I'm finding that when I download a torrent file it won't start in qBittorrent automatically. It won't even start if I try and load the torrent file directly, I must browse to the torrent file from qBittorrent to add it.
And yes, qBittorrent is set as the default program for torrents.
How do I fix this?

Re: Forced to add torrent files manually?
Sounds like a bad file association in the browser. You forgot to mentioned what browser you use.

I have noticed that some browsers need to be restarted for them to take notice of new file associations.
What browser, what os?

You are exactly correct, mostly. I'm using firefox on Windows 7 Ultimate, and just had to restart the system for it to work. Thanks.
Feels kind of silly that I didn't try that in the first place, ah well.

Nothing to feel silly about. The important thing is that this issue has been resolved. Sometimes we are all learning something new here, and someone else might find this thread useful.
