NUBE question--getting started

I thought I could figure out what I was doing, but I'm now staring at two downloads that have been showing the status as "Downloading..." for about 20 minutes, and they are still at 0%.
Is there a way to kick them into actually transferring some bits?

Hi and welcome,
A few questions:
- Are you using 3.1.9.2? The version isn't that important though but its good to know which version you are using.
- Windows XP or 7?
- Are there actually peers available? If the torrent is dead, meaning there are no peers at all, you can't download either.
- Is your listening port open (green icon on the bottom)? If not it can cause some connection problems.
- Does it download if you add a different torrent that has enough seeds/peers?

-Yes, Using 3.1.9.2
- Windows 7
- Like I said, I'm a nube, so I'm not sure what "peers are." None are showing. How do I get some?
- Icons at the bottom are a yellow "setup" button, a speed meter, a green down arrow, and a yellow up arrow.
How do I find/add additional torrents?

Take a look here for a configuration guide:
http://www.techsupportalert.com/optimizing-qbittorrent-speed
As I said, if the torrent is dead (meaning that there are no peers available) you can't download either. Did you try a different popular torrent? You can try this torrent (just for test purpose) if it downloads or not.

If you don't know the ''torrenting'' terms take a look here, or you can use Google yourself. Plenty of information is available

Aha! Many thanks. Following the threads you started me on, I discovered that I had somehow enabled Anonymous mode!
All seems well, now.
The help you provided is much appreciated.

That explains why you were not (fully) reachable

.
Anonymous Mode
Since v2.9.0, qBittorrent supports a feature called "Anonymous Mode".
When enabled, qBittorrent tries to hide its identity to a certain degree. The peer-ID will no longer include the client's fingerprint. The user-agent will be reset to an empty string. Trackers will only be used if they are using a proxy server. The listen sockets are closed, and incoming connections will only be accepted through a SOCKS5 or I2P proxy (if a peer proxy is set up and is run on the same machine as the tracker proxy). Since no incoming connections are accepted, NAT-PMP, UPnP, DHT and local peer discovery are all turned off when this setting is enabled.
If you're using I2P, it might make sense to enable anonymous mode as well.
