I wouldn't necessarily say "Stay away from free ones", but "Rather use one of the VPNs you pay for than a free one."
You do not know what they do with the information they receive of you (IP-address, maybe some cookies and whatnot), as they have to generate money in order to keep the VPN-servers alive too.
Commonly Private Internet Access is regarded as one of the best VPNs out there.

Free VPNs are honeypots, never use them.
Paid VPNs are good, but not really usable for torrenting.
SOCKS5 proxy is good, but some implementations are buggy, people received DMCA requests while using them.
Best solution is renting a seed server.
