VPN+qBittorrent+start with windows? What are my options?

Ok, i understand simple ways exist around this - but id like to get it working the way "I" prefer.
Heres my issue. I run a vpn (but only sometimes). I run qbittorrent at windows startup. After 1 too many letters, I went with a vpn.
Torrents wont connect unless connected to the VPN. I also run the vpn client at windows startup (but dont have it connect unless I intend to use, latency be damned - i game alot).
So what im stuck with is a torrent client thats red - no connections. This is obviously correct and intended. However when I connect to the vpn, it stays that way. I have to close qbittorrent, and re open it to get it to go green and connect properly.
Any way to do this "on the fly"? Like, refresh what connection qbittorrent sees without closing and reopening the client each time? Or have it check on intervals even? At current, its defeating the point of having it start with windows ;p
I may be stuck with a "lesser of the evils" type situation, but im hoping a means exists to manually refresh qbittorrent at least.
Thanks!
