i/o error & wrong path on newly created torrent

Hello,
I've just started with QBT & am having an issue creating torrents. Hope someone can help.
When I create a torrent I select the directory that has the files I want; the torrent is created & says it is seeding. However, once someone actually tries to download I get an i/o error. When I select 'open containing folder' it opens to the parent folder, not the one I selected when creating the torrent. Naturally, the files are not in this folder so an i/o error is expected.
The only workaround I've been able to find is to relocate the torrent files to the actual folder before I share the torrent. This is extra work & shouldn't be necessary.
Can anyone give me some assistance on why this is happening? I can't find a setting that would affect this, and the fact that it supposedly 'seeds' right after creation, even though the path is wrong, befuddles me.
I am running Win 10, QBT V 4.13
Thanks,
Denise
