Slow download speed
Slow download speed
Hey,
Just installed qBittorrent a while ago. While the first 5 minutes of initial use gave me good speed, the speed dropped later on. I started with speeds ranging from 600KB - 1 MB and now I'm getting an average of 6KB/s. I'm also getting a yellow light on the connection status. I tried opening the random port (12819) assigned in the settings using these instructions: http://www.thewindowsclub.com/block-ope ... 8-firewall but trying out different port checkers online still tells me they're closed. Just did a speed test and I have a download rate of 2.34 MB/s. For the torrent, I'm getting 38(43) for seeds and 7(18) for peers. If it helps, I'm running on Windows 8.1, connected on wifi through my Samsung S4's hotspot.
Hopefully, someone can help me out.
Thanks!

Re: Slow download speed
ISP throttling is the most likely scenario. While the first 5 minutes of initial use gave me good speed, the speed dropped later on. I started with speeds ranging from 600KB - 1 MB and now I'm getting an average of 6KB/s
Change the port, turn off the firewall, restart qBT to see if the same thing occurs. repeat several times and take note of the time scales.
Re: Slow download speed
I just did that 6 times leaving it for 5 minutes or so for every restart but still got nothing. Also did the ISP throttling test on Glasnost and it said there's no throttling going on.
Thanks for the help though.
Thanks for the help though.
Re: Slow download speed
Whether you think you got "nothing" is NOT important or even remotely interesting it is the DATA from each test that will show what may be happening. "Glasnost" testing does NOT determine if dynamic throttling is being deployed by the provider, the results and observations from this testing might.
So what are the results from the tests, rather than your opinion of the outcome?
Port number used?
Is your client set to use the same port for DHT?
Did the rate increase on each restart?
Was it five minutes each time before the rate dropped?
Did the connection show "green" at any point?
What was the DHT node count?
Did it increase, decrease or remain static for the test duration?
and what "encryption setting" are you using?

You should try a popular(many peers) torrent like this one: http://www.nyaa.se/?page=download&tid=566057
I don't know how this works but have you forwarded the port on the router?

Re: Slow download speed
Oh, sorry. I'm gonna do this all over again with the specifics.
Is your client set to use the same port for DHT? - Yes.
Was it five minutes each time before the rate dropped? - I meant I'd leave it on for 5 minutes then restart again.
and what "encryption setting" are you using? - Looking at qBit's settings, the only encryption setting I found was encryption mode which is set to 'prefer encryption.'
But anyway, here:
Trial 1 - 10:14 PM
Port number used? - 31145
Did the rate increase on each restart? - For the first few minutes, I was getting 5-10 KiB/s
Did the connection show "green" at any point? No
What was the DHT node count? - 85 nodes
Did it increase, decrease or remain static for the test duration? - Pretty much stayed on the 7-10 KiB/s range but mostly got 6-8 KiB/s.
Trial 2 - 10:26 PM
Port number used? - 26750
Did the rate increase on each restart? - A bit higher. This one reaches up to 14 KiB/s.
Did the connection show "green" at any point? Yes.
What was the DHT node count? - 163 nodes
Did it increase, decrease or remain static for the test duration? - Same as when it started, 7-14 KiB/s.
Trial 3 - 10:38 PM
Port number used? - 14691
Did the rate increase on each restart? - Same as previous trial.
Did the connection show "green" at any point? Yes.
What was the DHT node count? - 150 nodes
Did it increase, decrease or remain static for the test duration? - Same as previous trial.
Trial 4 - 10:46 PM
Port number used? - 25842
Did the rate increase on each restart? - Started out on 4-8 KiB/s.
Did the connection show "green" at any point? No.
What was the DHT node count? - 150 nodes
Did it increase, decrease or remain static for the test duration? - Fluctuated. Got 10-14 KiB/s occasionally but mostly got stuck on 4-6 KiB/s later on.
Trial 5 - 10:57 - 11:06 PM
Port number used? - 3253
Did the rate increase on each restart? - Got 9-12 KiB/s the first few minutes.
Did the connection show "green" at any point? No.
What was the DHT node count? - 138 nodes
Did it increase, decrease or remain static for the test duration? - On the average, probably stayed on the 9-12 KiB/s range.

I actually tried downloading one with around 5000+ seeds but was still slow. With the torrent you linked, I'm currently 5-7 KiB/s.
I have this app downloaded but I'm still figuring it out: http://www.appbrain.com/app/at.bherbst.net
Has anyone here used it before?

Re: Slow download speed
Does/did this happen with other clients too? Anyhow, it seems a port problem if I read it correctly.
Why not connecting directly to your router? Maybe this is causing the slow speeds.connected on wifi through my Samsung S4's hotspot.

Tried utorrent and got the same results.Nemo wrote: Does/did this happen with other clients too? Anyhow, it seems a port problem if I read it correctly.

Unfortunately, I don't have a router. When I do download torrents on my phone, I get high speeds.
Re: Slow download speed
Then I think that the problem lays on the connection with your S4. I've got a S4 myself but never used it as a hotspot yet. While Google'ing I found something similiar:

As someone has answered most likely the port doesn't get forwarded from your S4 to your laptop/PC,I just bought a Samsung S4 and am using its portable wifi hotspot feature for internet connectivity on my laptop when I go out the house. Works just fine when browsing the web(actually quite fast) but when I use uTorrent, it has an orange exclamation point icon near the bottom right. Downloads are slow even if I have 20-30+ seeders(around 6-10kbps max). Did a quick google search and found out(using canyouseeme.org and port forwarder port checker tool) that the port used by uTorrent is not open.
Checked my windows firewall exception and there's already an exception for uTorrent. I've even added new inbound and outbound rule to specify the port used by uTorrent but no luck.

Re: Slow download speed
I figured it's probably a port issue. I guess I just have to work out how to use that Port Forwarding app. Looking for guides on how to use it but no luck. But hey, if anyone has other suggestions, I'm open to try anything.Nemo wrote: Then I think that the problem lays on the connection with your S4. Re: Slow download speed
Since you're using an android lets assume that it is crap with networking stuff. So go to the advanced settings and set the half-open connections to something low like 5.
In the connection tab, set the global max to something low like 20, max con per torrent 10 and see what happens.

Re: Slow download speed
Also don't forget to set a limit on you uploading speed too, something like 10KB/s
Re: Slow download speed
Based on the results, it would appear that your provider has deployed 'dynamic' throttling, to prevent any one user taking to much bandwidth, the principle is that the connection is allowed a 'burst rate' for a limited period after that the 'flow rate' is limited for packets to a particular destination port.

I've applied the settings and my download rates seem to be the same. Thanks anyway!
