Hello all,
I am writing to ask for some help/clarification with qBittorrent's advanced settings'. I am using NordVPN through OpenVPN which gives me a connection of "tun0" i have specified that in the Network Interface (requires restart) setting. However, i have tested this and it does not instantly stop the torrents it just slows down byte by byte intervals until it reaches zero.
So, my question is, have i configured it correctly (i tried to include a screenshot of my settings for extra information, but i had issues adding it to this thread). Any help will be greatly appreciated. There is one more issue. After my VPN connection goes out qBittorrent stoped downloading right (which is what i want), but then i close the program and then i go to relaunch it via clicking on the icon and it NEVER, opens. The only way i can get it to turn on sometimes (in Ubuntu 16.04 LTS 64 Bit) is boot it via the Terminal by typing "qbitttorrent' then it starts the program, while also giving six lines saying the following "QIODevice::write (QTcpSocket): device not open" is this something i need to worry about? and if so, how do i fix it?
Thank You.
Sincerely,
Mr. Forum

I am not an expert, and I've only been using qBittorent for about 10 minutes, but I believe I can shed some light on your questions, though I maybe and probably am totally wrong.
The reason the download speed does not instantaneously drop to zero is that these things tend to show a rolling average of the speed, not the speed at this exact instant in time. So after the connection drops out, it will drop to zero over the time period the average is calculated. As long as it continuously goes down, hits 0 and stays there, its all good.
The reason you have issues starting the program when the VPN is not running is because you have specified the interface as 'tun0', this is a temporary device that only exists when the vpn is running. So when you try to start qBittorrent, and the VPN isn't running, it can't find a network interface to connect to. Which is also what the error messages are trying to tell you ie it can't open the network device you have specified.
So I would say, you are having no issues, and things are configured correctly. I on the other hand am having issues. Despite having specified tun0 as the network interface to use, qBittorrent still seems to be attempting to bind to other interfaces, and more importantly, when the VPN drops, continues to communicate via other interfaces. I am using qbittorrent v3.1.10.

Hello Nocturnal,
I would like to thank you for your response about the intervals when the VPN drops. However, i have issues launching qBittorrnet even if i close the program during the VPN, or when i close qBittorrent change or disconnect and reconnect to the same or a new VPN. The only way i am able to launch the program (sometimes), is to type qbittorrent into the Ubuntu terminal and then launch the icon from the launcher, unless it opens via the terminal.
All in all i just wanted to make sure i had set up my settings correctly so no one could track my torrenting activity if my VPN failed on Ubuntu. I know the program's log file will shed more light on what is going on behind the scenes, but i am having issues remembering where the file is located on Ubuntu.
Anyway i would like to thank you again for your help.
Sincerely,

Does NordVPN act as a client for OpenVPN or is it a manual VPN entry into your Network settings? Does it have a Network lock feature using Linux IPtables?
