Ports Question

Post by sunstrip »

I am going on holidays and will be away from home, but I will have internet an connection.  I would like to be able to still get my torrents.  So my question is....since I will not know what ports are being forwarded...what should I set my client at for the listening ports ? Is there a default that will work ? Thanks guys.

The default is it will NOT work.
UPnP might be able to auto-forward the port (or ports if you enable RSS feeds, WEBUI, internal tracker, etc) qBitTorrent uses on the intervening router/s in the way...but it often won't work, especially for low number service ports (below 1024).

More than likely, TCP peer+seed connections will be hopelessly firewalled and uTP may only be able to UDP hole-punch if there's no symmetric NAT and/or multi-layer NAT in the way.

So while traveling and using random wifi connections, you can expect qBT to be firewalled no matter what you do.
Even if in a hotel room with an Ethernet jack to plug into, you'll still be firewalled by their NAT router and/or web portal.

On top of this, you likely won't have more than a couple megabits/sec download and less than 1 megabit/sec upload in many places...and trying to have 100+ peer+seed+tracker connections at once may cause the whole connection to collapse.
