Some clarifications about OS cache, Disk cache and gaming

Post by majin5 »

Hi guys, I am currently using the 4.1.3 64-bit version of qbittorrent under Windows 10 x64 with 8gb of ram with a 12Mbps internet plan.

Basically I noticed since the last few releases, I had issues when loading one particular game Valve's Dota2. My comp would take ages for the initial load and would take even longer for the first ingame load of a map. After going through the usual list of suspects I found that this was happening only when qbt was running as well.

Now I have never had this problem before when running qbt simultaneously, so after checking the forums and alot of googling I disabled the OS cache setting and found that my load times and in game load times went back to what they used to be before.

I would like someone to please enlighten me on why is keeping the OS cache setting 'on' impacting me when I am playing Dota2. Also the game is installed on my primary hdd and I am downloading to another storage disk.

Now that I have disabled OS cache, should I change the disk cache settings which are disabled by default. After alot of reading on the forums and libtorrent I am thoroughly confused as well as what these setting do. Can anyone kindly help me in this regard.

Since you have disabled OS caching, turn qBT's disk cache on either automatic mode (-1) or 100-300 MB max size.
Set cache duration to 600 seconds (highest allowed), since throwing away data in cache is pointless if the cache isn't full.
