Port forwarding and UPnP problems

Post by kimis981 »

Hello guys and thank you to anyone who will be willing to help me.
I have the feeling that sometimes people cant really connect to me when i seed something. I'm not 100% sure but i'm trying to understand if ive done everything i should be doing.
Few things:
1- I have a router and using windows firewall.
2 - I set port X for the incoming connection (in options->connections), and opened it on my router and my firewall, if i use a page to check that port (like yougetsignal), it does say its open.

Now my question is, is that enough? I mean, i'm sure qBittorent use other ports as well right? Since ive enabled UPnP (but i think it'd be the same even without having it enabled), if qBittorent uses other ports, maybe it works thru my windows firewall, but what about my router? I have UPnP and NAT-PMP enabled on my router as well but you never know for sure.

So my question is, how many ports does exactly qbittorent use? I dont think it just uses the one i can choose in options->connections, if i turn off UPnP, does it just use that one and nothing else for sure, so i can be sure i'm reachable?
And what can i do to test if im reachable? A tool like yougetsignal works for a single port but if i dont know which ports # qbittorent uses i cant check for sure.
Thanks in advance!

Hello kimis981,

There is a difference between outgoing and incoming connections. For outgoing connections, the connections that are initiated from within your lan, that includes your computer, there are normally no router limitations to the ports you can use. For the incoming connections which are initiated from somewhere else on the internet, you have to forward the external router port to your computer so the router accepts this traffic and knows where to forward it.

I hope this reply is useful for you.
