qbittorrent, out of memory handling

Post by andwan0 »

I have 1TB torrent that i like to verify.
Eventually there'll be 2TB torrents.

I have an old PC with 2GB RAM.
Whilst force rechecking my torrent I can see the RAM usage slowly creeping up (starting from 1GB usage).
Eventually PC will crash once it maxes 2GB RAM. Strange thing is that none of my swap was used.

It would be beneficial if qBittorent had a setting for low-RAM users.. a setting to set the max. RAM to use.... and then smartly cater the force-recheck-verify to only use max. RAM, etc.

Luckily, I force hard reboot and qBittorrent resumes the verify from last time. But still, would be good if PC doesn't crash by smartly restricting max. RAM usage.

- Please check if this behavior happens with both the V2 libtorrent variant and the v1 variant.
- You don't need as much ram as the torrent's size. If that was the case, no one would check anything, because 99.99% don't have 100GB+ memory in their computer. Maybe RAM usage is climbing because you are still downloading while you also do a recheck? Then the HDD can slow down and the system starts putting the new downloaded data into ram eventually filling it up.

I don't know. What OS? I can't even think of an OS that could run well with 2GB. Are you on Windows XP?

Thanks for the fast reply.

Am on Linux and I think we don't have a choice in libtorrent version?

Also, no. Not downloading or doing anything else on Linux. It's a clean install of a lightweight Linux distro bodhi Linux.

Do suggestions from this forum usually get forwarded to sourceforge?

It depends on your distribution. Linux gets complicated pretty fast because you build software with shared libraries. So every distro has different libraries. I'd recommend using Debian for example. If you run a lightweight desktop like XFCE, it is lightweight.

No need because it's a distribution issue. I'd file a ticket on Bodhi's bug tracker.
