[Solved, itself, somehow...] Please help me get my speed back.

Post by VIKINGS »

Hello World,

Yesterday sometime during the day the ethernet cable(where it enters the motherboard) came a bit loose/wasn't making the connection properly, I figured that out when I first noticed in qbit that my speeds where trash, then I did a speedtest.net and indeed my speed was about 10% of what it should have been.

So I jiggled the cable a bit and everything went back to normal, everything that is apart from qbit!! :'(
I have no idea how/why/what changes got applied under the hood(because my connection became unstable I assume?), or what applied them(was it qbit itself, or the OS, or...) but the speeds are still utter trash.

To clarify speedtest.net now reports everything back in the proper ranges of 800-900 mbps with pings under 20 ms, canyouseeme.org reports my port is still open, so it should work..... :'( :'( And speeds in other places, such as downloads through the browser for example from sites like mega.whatever are fine/fast.

Things I've tried:

- renamed the

Code: Select all

/home/vikings/.local/share/qBittorrent/
and

Code: Select all

/home/vikings/.config/qBittorrent/
folders to get qbit to go back to default settings. Then fired it up, changed only the port(didn't touch any other setting) and added a torrent, still crap. So I put my original folders back.

- not sure if this affects programs such as qbit(shouldn't if I understand it correctly) but just to be safe I changed the dns from the regular adguard one I use to google dns, then to my isp dns, then back to the adguard one. Nothing.

- updated my system this morning which also took qbit from version 5.0.2 to 5.0.3, nada!... :'( :'(

Pretty please, what else can I do?!?! :-\

My system is

Code: Select all

  Kernel: 6.12.4-arch1-1 arch: x86_64 bits: 64
Desktop: KDE Plasma v: 6.2.4 Distro: EndeavourOS
Let me know if you need any other info.

Thank you in advance.

A cable can't just become slower or faster depending on how snug the connection is.
- Either it connects
- Or it does not

You CAN make a butchered 100mbps cable out of a 1gbps if you mess up several strands but it has to be done on purpose. It's like a "ghetto split" that people done in the old times. Again, did not happen to you.

- Check your network settings, see if it says 100mbit or 1000mbit
- Check if you are using an actual Cat5E (at least) cable and that it goes to your router's 1gbps capable port
- Check "dmesg" in your OS and see if there is anything. Ie.: Pull cable out, plug it back in, open dmesg. It should say the detected speed, etc.

Uuuummmm, no offence please Peter, really, but I told you exactly/literally what happened. Sometimes when that cable doesn't sit right I get disconnected entirely, but this time it went: connection speed suddenly at 10%-ish of what is should be>jiggled the cable>connection speed back up for everything but qbit.

Heck maybe it's not the cable, maybe it's the slot on the motherboard itself, I don't know(all this is beyond my level of technical knowledge), but my point is if/while there are issues shouldn't the entire system be affected and not just a single program?

To answer your questions:

- network settings says "Connection speed: 1GBit/s";

- it's the same cable I've always used and yes it was always plugged into that port of the router, I didn't touch that part;

- this is what that command showed after unplugging the cable and plugging it back in:

Code: Select all

Ok, well the good news is that just as suddenly my speeds seem to be back up in qbit too, yaaay. ;D The bad news is that now I am even more confused!!!.... ??? ??? ???

Anyone wanna take a stab at explaining WTF actually happened these past couple of days??

P.S. And no, I do not have a metered connection/contract...
