Can't seed

Post by Spekkyboy »

Hi,
I am new to qBittorrent, after using uTorrent for a long time.
I am trying to seed a file, and it isn't working. It downloaded great. But I would like to seed.
I'm using Firefox for a browser, and Avast! as security.
Any advice would be great. And as I am a semi-luddite, don't assume I know something.
Thanks!
Spekkyboy

Also, in the "trackers," the status is "Not Working" and the message is "Passkey matches user." Any help?

Are you downloading a torrent from a private tracker? i.e. You have to login to access the website.
This seems odd since you were still able to download but not upload?

Unless you have torrent queuing enabled or share ratio limiting (or per torrent limit), once it's done downloading it would automatically switch to uploading. More info needed please.

If you're running avast! with all its features enabled, then there's a high probability that that's your problem right there!
I'm runing avast! Free Antivirus myself, and believe me when I say that running this program with all features enabled will do your system more harm than good.

Here's a guide that I wrote for installing/configuring avast! (Tested with "avast! Free Antivirus"):

* Before installing (Preperations for a clean install):
1) Uninstall old avast! version.
2) Reboot.
3) Delete these folders (if they exist):
C:\Program Files\AVAST Software\Avast (or its equivalent on other Windows versions)
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\AVAST Software\Avast (or its equivalent on other Windows versions)
C:\Documents and Settings\*****\Application Data\AVAST Software\Avast (or its equivalent on other Windows versions)
C:\Documents and Settings\*****\Local Settings\Application Data\AVAST Software\Avast (or its equivalent on other Windows versions)
4) Delete these reg. strings (if they exist):
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Avast Software\Avast
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\AVAST Software\Avast

* When installing:
1) If you don't want to install Google Chrome, make sure that you uncheck it.
2) Click "Custom install" > "Next" > "Custom".
3) Uncheck all Real-Time Shields, except for the "File Shield" (called "File System Shield" elswhere in the program), which is the only thing that you really need!
4) Uncheck ALL Components (these are all just additional protection components, which you'll do best without).

* After installing (includes information on how to disable features that you might not have installed, if you followed the "When installing" guide above):
1) First, reboot your computer, for all installed components to register properly.
2) Double-click the avast! icon that resides in the system tray (this will bring up the avast! GUI).
3) Stop all Real-Time Shields PERMANENTLY, except for the "File System Shield", which is the only thing that you really need!
..After doing this, remember to edit your Status Bar settings to avoid a crossed out icon in the system tray (Settings > Status Bar > Components Monitored).
4) Disable all Additional Protection, if installed/availiable/enabled (AutoSandbox / Browser protection / Remote Assistance / Site Blocking).
"AutoSandbox" can be disabled here: Real-Time Shields > File System Shield > Expert Settings > AutoSandbox.
"Browser protection" is a collection of browser plugins that each needs to be uninstalled.
"Remote Assistance" does nothing as long as you don't activate it manually.
"Site Blocking" is normally disabled by default (if not, then disable it).
5) Disable all Cloud Services (Settings > Cloud Services).
6) Disable all Community features (Settings > Community).
7) When done, reboot your computer once more.

I disagree with all of that, I have avast installed (free antivirus) with all default settings and I have no problem uploading or seeding.

Why would you install an antivirus software and then cripple it from doing it's job?

Because the File System Shield is actually perfectly capable of doing the entire job on its own.
Having all that other crap enabled is total overkill, and will only result in problems like decreased system performance, slower internet browsing speeds and non-working applications.
Also, the Community features makes the program qualify is spyware!

Avast works just perfectly fine with both uTorrent and qBittorrent.
I've been using this combination on two of my desktops, two laptops, and two of my servers.
Neither of those had any problem, ever.

MSE however did manage to lock up files causing both clients to halt as the files got locked.
Panda... I don't know. It's more like a "marketing product". It may warn you.. or may not. And it tells you to get Panda if you want real protection. So it's like an anti-virus, except it's not. (Yeah that sentence totally makes sense. But once you give it a spin, you know what I mean.)
