download speeds considerably slow from MBps => kBps

Dear Sir/Miss,

I have always used bitcomet to download torrents for a very, very long time, as I feel comfortable with it - I just guess its what to you accustomed to.

However, following this recent problem with it (an amber light at the bottom left 'listening port' that was green a while back), which as now turned yellow (saying listening port blocked), which as slowed my download speeds considerably from MBps => kBps, and now 3 days in, doing the instructions shown on their website, I am unable to fix the dam thing and I have given up as I am ready to pull my hair out Arrrrgghhhh.

So I googled the 2013 torrent clients, and as you were second best for out of the top-ten "TAXATI" was at the top but I downloaded both, wasn't too keen on Taxati, so I chose you instead.

Your programme gives me a green light but speeds are still slow, highest I've got is just over 1MB, with no other software being used, it's driving me mad..... I'm with Virgin (on the 60MB package or is it 60GB??) so downloads should be very, very fast, shouldn't they??? I have done a speed check shown below and used the special Calculator to put all the numbers in.

For ease of helping me I have stated the following standard questions and answers:

1) What version of QBitTORRENT are you using?

Ans: v3.0.9 

2) What type of Internet connection do you have (ADSL, etc.)?

Ans: I'm connected direct from a Virgin Super Hub via the Ethernet lead.

3) Do you have a modem? Do you use a router? What make and model are each one of them? Have you forwarded your port?

Ans: It's a Virgin Super Hub (VMDG480) - (is that a router too?) this is the only internet providing device. NETGEAR and CG101D. No I don’t think I have Forwarded my port.

4) If you have more than one router, be sure to mention the make and model of both devices, how are they connected (i.e. in which connector of both devices is the network cable plugged) and which one of the devices is connected to or is the modem. Also, if you have more than one computer make sure to mention in this case, to which router is every one of them connected.

Ans: (See ans:4). Mine is a network Ethernet cable plugged in to my mini-tower computer connects directly from the Super Hub as it is not wireless PC info - http://i.imgur.com/BzY9gwL.jpg the application in the home is mum's ipad that is wireless (using Wi-Fi or whatever) to get a signal, but that's hardly ever used.

5) What version of Windows, Firewall and Antivirus do you use?

Ans: Windows 7 Ultimate 64-Bit, Windows Firewall and BitDefender Total Security 2013 both checked to accept your programme - Does Windows Defender have any association with the problem? 

6) If you are asking about a specific torrent or file that you have downloaded, make sure that you include the complete torrent name, as well as the complete names of the files and their respective extensions/formats (e.g.: .rar, .wma, .bin, .cue, etc.).

Ans: Any torrent, but if I’m on the net and download it directly from the internet (hence no torrent programme downloads it) and it downloads very fast and in MBps too - so strange.

7) For speed-related issues, please run various speed tests at a site such as speedtest.net (make sure that no other computer is using your Internet connection and that all other programs - including QBitTorrent - are closed, during the tests). Include the results, along with the settings that you are presently using, in your post, so that we may review and offer suggestions to improve its performance.

Someone must know how to speed up my downloading to the standards of a 60MB virgin download package....

Do you download many torrent simultaneously or one at a time?
Try to download 2-3 popular(many seeds) torrents simultaneously. Does the speed as a whole stay at 1MB/s ? (see the value in the green arrow in the status bar).
Maybe Virgin throttles you back when you use bittorrent. You could try to enforce encrypted connections: Tools->Options...->BitTorrent->Encryption mode:->Require Encryption

Did you used to get full download speed when you used to use bitcomet, before it turned yellow? Or, what else changed?
Or, maybe your ISP wised up to your usage, have you tried different ports?

That would be 60 megabit per second or theoretically about 7MB/s. Then also something to keep in mind, though you probably already know, torrents are not equal to servers i.e. downloading a linux distro from torrent vs downloading it from a server, from a torrent you are relying on others' upload speed whereas a server typically has much higher upload capacity. Your own upload test proves that, if it's accurate, looks like you have approximately "60/3" that upload is low in my opinion compared to download speed... which will also affect your download speed if you don't configure upload limits correctly. My internet package is "30/4" but, if I got a 60meg package it better come with AT LEAST 6meg upload.

All seems to be working fine, the listening port is fine (despite BitTorrent say it was blocked)

Which, I am now thinking that my settings must be wrong, somewhere.

No it is not static at 1MB, I'd be over the moon if it was, I just stated that figure has been achieved but only for a few seconds and then its back down to 300kps. I get speeds around 300kbs, which downloads with high seeds and peers checking and the comments made on their torrent (i.e 400/300).

Like I have stated that I have used the speed guide and then the on-line calculator for the numbers and where to put them.

Again, its strange, such as if I download a Microsoft product lets say service pack one for windows 7, if I do not use a torrent client for the download and use the box that appears (run, save as, cancel) I get mps FAST, but use the torrent client and the download the same 300kbs occurs SLOW.

that router you got there is your problem its a stinking pile of garbage all AIO router/modems SUCK horribly for torrents
replace that sticking pile of garbage with a real modem and router

First, stop pm'ing every mod (or people, if  you did) for asking to help you. Second, as Onemoar mentioned, I think your problem lays somewhere else than the client. Running speedtest is fine but that doesn't mean you will reach that speed with torrenting. Still depends on the others uploadspeed so it is possible but not always. Not talking about private sites.

Well nobody is forced to help you remote, its their choice. If someone wants to well go ahead but I can say I won't. I don't like to call or talk with mobile or whatever, its something you must search out with our help here at the forums or internet (Google..) like anyone else. We are not from a paid helpdesk to help you personally or drive by your home you know..

Lets get to the problem; Im not sure what your experience is with torrenting like what you used before and what you were getting back then. What are your settings now? Im on fiber line and max connections limit per torrent is at 150. This way im not connecting to too much peers (can cause low speeds) and maxing my speed very often. Again, I think your problem lays somewhere else than the client, more like your Modem or Router.

Downloading over HTTP and downloading over  BitTorrent are two totally different things and cannot, and should not be compared.

Do you expect loads of people to take time out of their busy day to help you? This is free software not Microsoft premium support package.

Maybe Virgin throttles their network for filesharing so you're stuck with 300kbps whether you use qbittorrent or not. There are things you can do if you research.

Run some [url=http://"http://broadband.mpi-sws.org/transparency/glasnost.php"]Glasnost testing[/url] to see if your ISP is "shaping" P2P traffic.

And Virgin Media DO throttle heavy traffic users at peak times.
