qBitorrent v5.0.0 slow download speed

Post by kubbie »

I just upgraded to qBittorent v5.0.0 from v4.6.7 and I noticed a big decrease in transfer speed. In v4.6.7 I was getting anywhere from 50Mb-90Mb on my 1Gbit link but with v5.0 I'm getting like 4Mb-6Mb. I reinstalled v4.6.7 and my speed is back to normal. I'm using Windows 11 64bit.

- The "V5" has nothing to do with the underlying library which does the heavy lifting.

- If you check, the library versions are 100% the same: https://www.qbittorrent.org/news
If you are using the V1 and not V2 libtorrent.
If you are on V2, just download the V1 variant. You can switch between them.

I am using v1 of the 4.6.7 release so I downloaded v1 of the v5.0. Anyone experiencing similar issues or what I can look at to help increase speed?

Are you using different configurations between qBittorrent v4.6.7 & v5.0.0? Are you running them on the same machine? Taking the high number from the range you gave (6Mbps), if that's in megabytes per second then that would mean you're only using 4.8% of your 1Gbps downstream link capacity. If the number is in megabits per second then you're only getting 0.6%. Both are indicative of heavy-duty throttling by your ISP.

I am using the same configuration as I upgraded v5.0 from v4.6.7 and it's on the same machine. I tested 4 different torrent files from 2 different private trackers on both v5 and v4.6.7. The speed difference is night and day when I switched back to v4.6.7

That's really bizarre. There are a few things it could be. Have you tried completely uninstalling qBittorrent and doing a clean reinstall of v5? You don't necessarily have to wipe all of your data & settings but the option to do it is there.

Do you use a VPN when you torrent? How about peer connection encryption, have you tried forcing it through “Require encryption” (Options → BitTorrent → “Encryption mode”) in qBittorrent's settings? The reason I ask is because another possibility that I mentioned previously is that you're being throttled by your ISP. In extreme cases they'll limit you to less than 1% of your bandwidth which will reduce your throughput to nothing. qBittorrent v5's traffic flow characteristics might look slightly different than v4.6.7's which could result in its connections being easier to classify and thus throttle.

But then nothing changed. The library is exactly the same. As LilTroy said maybe you are on-off your VPN, thus the difference?

Speed appears to be normal now after un-installing and reinstalling and morroring the settings on my v4.6.7
The problem I have now is when I add new torrents its "stalled" If I close and open Qbittorrent a few times sometimes it will start downloading. I have setup v4.6.7 portable as a test and I don't get that issue in v4.6.7. scratching my head.
