qBit/Windows using up whole RAM - can't use it almost at all

Post by franz »

Hi guys,

I can't run qBittorrent for longer than 20 minutes as all my RAM gets used up and computer becomes unusable, I have to reset.
I read most of threads about this problem, I disabled OS cache, I limited connections and speed etc.

I have Windows 10, Core i5, 8 GB RAM, torrent is run from new 3TB drive. Connection 240MB download/24 MB upload.
I tested RAM with Windows built in utility and also with MemTest - no errors.

So what is going on -
I turn on qBittorrent, I turn on Task Manager.
I'm downloading one torrent at ~300Kb/s and uploading at max 50Kb/s.
In task manager qTorrent is using like 250MB, but the overall usage of memory goes step by step to over 99% and computer is unresponsive at this point.

But if I turn off qBittorrent when the RAM is let's say 80% busy - it stays at 80%, Windows does not clear it - I have to restart.

I find it ridiculous, I could download/upload for weeks without problems on my old 433Mhz with 64 megs of RAM :D and now this...

Any new fixes for this?

In qBitTorrent's advanced settings, disable OS cache.
You may need to use qBitTorrent's own disk cache (or make it larger) to compensate.

Do you have qBT v4.1.1? (latest version) It might help slightly for that problem...

Hi thanks for your reply,
Yes I run the latest verison 4.1.1
OS cache is already disabled, and disk cache is set to 1500MB.

I switched it on again 10 minutes ago and I'm already at 75% RAM used and growing.

I guess qBitTorrent is just being buggy.
qBT's disk cache can use ~1.3x as much ram as you have it set to...so it shouldn't be set >1000 MB size on 32bit version or it can crash.

Try with Windows OS caching enabled and qBT's cache either disabled OR set to 100 MB size or less.

So I switched to uTorrent - same problem, 20 minutes to fill up the RAM and computer becomes unresponsive.
Same complaints on their forum as here.

I switched to Vuze - complete disaster, this program is not even downloading torrents.

Then I switched to uTorrent 2.2.1 from 2011 - guess what? No problems with RAM.
When I download 4-5 torrents it's using 50-60 megs of RAM and RAM does not get clogged up even after several hours.

So what is wrong that old versions of programs work - and new versions don't work, and developers say - it's not our program it's Windows swap file, cache etc...
There is no such problem with older versions.

I must check some old verion of qbit and see...
